New Product Showcase: Wine Rack Cable Systems

Tensile Cables has designed a sleek range of Wine Rack Cables that suspends your Wine Collection on Stainless Steel Cables. Our Wine Rack Cable Systems are ideal for Wine Farms, Retail Outlets, Restaurants & Wine Collectors to display their Wine Collections in a superior way. Tensile Cables supply Cable Wine Racks for three different basic applications:

  1. Frame systems mounted on floors or solid material, using steel, timber, or other materials for support frames.
  2. Frame systems attached to walls of brick or other strong material.
  3. Floor to Ceiling supported systems

Advantages of Wine Rack Cables:

  • Flexibility – All our cable wine racks are custom made, and the three systems have been designed to be totally flexible regarding size, such that any width and height can be accommodated.
  • Bottles facing outwards or sideways – bottles in either direction can be easily accommodated in any of the systems
  • Cable connectors for use with wine racks – our cable systems utilize swaged studs, swaged sockets, swaged button heads, swaged threaded wood screws, swaged forks, swivel end bolts (for connecting steel hollow sections), and various types of anchor bolts. More details of these items can be seen on our website – www.tensilecables.co.za. All these connectors have very low visual impact and give the impression of a minimalist floating support to the wine bottles.
  • Due to the spacing of suspended cables you may accommodate more bottle sizes and varieties.
  • Bottles can all be spaced apart for easier viewing.
  • The simplicity of the suspended cables allows for more label visibility.
  • LED Accent lighting may be used to light up your display.
  • Wine Rack Cables allow for constant airflow between bottles which allows your wine temperature to remain the same.

Majik Forest Trellis

Tensile Cables recently completed trellises at Majik Forest Shopping Centre in Durbanville.
A green wall is an urban and architectural element in areas that otherwise have no natural green context.
A green facade has the ability to transform the outer skin of our cities into a living landscape, allowing the concrete and brick to become environmental assets themselves.
We can create more desirable places to live and work by cloaking some of our urban landscape with a living tapestry.

Green walls are deterrents for graffiti artists, they shield walls from the elements and the improve the air quality of the building surrounds. They also act as a natural insulation solution keeping large concrete walls cooler in the Summer months, and wrapping them up in the cold Winter months, and have been proven to reduce heating and cooling costs in large scale buildings.

Our trellises were installed on the walls in the malls parking lot, and in the coming months will see green foliage scaling the walls.

Stunning Cable Staircase in Kenrock Country Estate

Kenrock Country Estate is a low-density residential Eco Estate that comprises 94 homes on a 34 hectare estate, with more than 13 hectares of communal ground. Kenrock is situated on the foothills of Table Mountain in Hout Bay, which is a unique location where mountain and valley meet on the rising slopes that surround the estate. This staircase required a cable balustrade to secure the open staircase and make it safe. The balustrade posts are all in white to fit in and blend in with the surrounding white scheme of the room. 8 single lines of Stainless Steel cable were used to complete the balustrade cables each spaced 100mm apart.

Hand swaging & Hydraulic swaging of cables

Here at Tensile Cables, we have developed our own brand of hand swaging tool which allows cables to be cut to length and conveniently swaged on site. This tool is a specialist tool designed by our qualified Engineers for Tensile Cable’s clients. The tool head is machined out of specialist tool steel and the head is sent to be hardened in a process that allows the tool to leave a perfect swaged finish on your Stainless-Steel fittings. This tool greatly simplifies installation work on site, and shortens the time required for the completion of your cable project. We would not advise the use of any other hand tool for the installation of cables. Hand swaging tools can be purchase or hired from us at our office.

Tensile Cables use hydraulic swaging machines to attach the end fittings neatly onto the cables as can be seen on the swaged stud fitting and balustrade post image below. This method of attachment ensures that the breaking strength of the completed cable systems is greater than the specified tensile strengths of the cables.

Tensile Cables has had 25 years of wide-ranging experience in the design, manufacture, and installation of stainless-steel cable systems from 1.5 to 16 mm diameter cables. Our service includes assisting with structural advice regarding the support systems for all our cable systems.

Balustrade in Mount Bain Nature Reserve

Our client required Stainless Steel Cables for the balustrade of their secluded Mountain cabin deck. Stonewood Mountain Cabin is a rustic Mountain Cabin nestled in the Mount Bain Nature Reserve in Bainskloof, South Africa. Positioned high up on the side of a hill the Cabin treats the visitor to uninterrupted views of snow-capped mountains in winter.

Situated inside the 660-hectare Mount Bain Private Nature Reserve, it offers breath-taking fynbos, farmland and views of the Witte River. The thin Stainless-Steel cables were specifically selected because they provide a very safe barrier and at the same time do not impede the breath-taking views of the surrounds.

Stainless Steel Cable Grade 316 Maintenance

Stainless Steel Grade 316 cables and fittings are very popular for their longevity, durability, and aesthetic mirror finish all whilst being able to withstand the harsh conditions of the African Coastline. Tensile Cables supplies a range of high-quality Stainless-Steel Grade 316 Cables and fittings for this purpose.

To ensure your Cables always remain in great condition we recommend using only the highest quality Stainless Steel cables and fittings. Tensile Cables has our products tested by a SASAS (South African National Accreditation System)and ISO accredited Materials Testing Facility in Cape Town. This is to ensure our products continue to remain of the highest quality Stainless Steel Grade 316. We are also able to supply a Mill certificate of origin for each product in order to show that the ingredients of our Stainless Steel products are of the highest quality.

Below you will find a few housekeeping tips to increase the lifespan of your Balustrade, Trellis and Stainless Steel cables. Your Stainless Steel Grade 316 products have a unique polished appearance called the passive layer. This very shiny polished passive layer helps to protect the Stainless Steel from the outside elements and from corrosion penetrating the Stainless Steel.

  • Keep all fittings and cables clean and away from any contaminants. Do not perform any grinding near the Balustrade

  • During Installation: put masking tape on contact surfaces of tools and spanners, in order to try eliminating contamination of the stainless steel
  • Remember to use a thin clear silicon coating underneath the L-shaped brackets upon assembly to ensure minimum chance for any discoloration and corrosion originating from the concrete wall
  • Ensure your cable installer cuts all Grade 316 Stainless Steel cables using a dedicated grinder with a slim line cutting disk that has not come into contact with any mild steel
  • Care after installation is also very important: Routine gentle cleaning with a mild detergent and soft sponge using lukewarm water only is recommended (clean when cleaning your windows)
  • Water from your sprayer system to be Municipal water quality only as water containing fertilizers or water from bore holes is not recommended
  • Discoloration on the wall side of the fittings and under the washers, screw threads and cable strands can take place over time without regular maintenance, but does not mean failure of your system
  • Tea staining: is a slight brown discoloration on fittings created over time when not cleaned. Important note: this is not rust but drown discoloration caused by mineral deposits on the steel. This can be cleaned off following the cleaning instructions mentioned above

Deck with a View in the Cape Wine Lands

This Deck with a View was built outside the town of Wellington in the heart of the Cape Wine Lands using Stainless Steel Grade 316 cables.

The town of Wellington is situated at the base of one of the oldest Mountain passes in South Africa, Bains Kloof Pass built by Master Road Builder Andrew Geddes Bain. Wellington is a town well known for its agriculture such as wine, table grapes, deciduous fruit, and thriving brandy industry.

The Stainless Steel Grade 316 cables on this Balustrade provide a safety barrier without compromising the spectacular views. The wooden handrail sits on top of the painted mild steel posts which provide added support and attached to the side of the deck. All the cables are spaced 100 mm apart according to the building regulations.
