Cable balustrades framed in timber in Oranjezicht

In a home renovation in a Oranjezicht, Cape Town, Tensile Cables was asked to supply its stainless steel balustrade cable systems by Peter Cooper from HPC Carpentry and Joinery.

Balustrades appear on both the third floor between two sophisticated timber screens giving privacy to the bedrooms, as well as surrounding the deck and braai area below.

Rather than detracting from the timber, the stainless steel seemingly disappears into the background, and at the forefront is the beauty of the timber work and joinery. Timber also clads large portions of the building, and it was used to conceal structural steel eye beams supporting the wooden pergolas over the 2nd floor deck. The carpenter ran shadow lines into the cladding adding an aesthetic feature to the structure, visible from both the 2nd and third floors.

The home boasts beautiful views from its upper levels, and the client wanted a solution that both complimented the natural look of the architecture, and didn’t obstruct the scenery beyond.

4 Unique Vertical Gardens for small spaces

Vertical Gardens are popping up in business parks, shopping malls, and even as practical features for smaller spaces like these we’ve found below. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing but they are a practical use of space, and offset your carbon footprint. Indoors and outdoors, trellises, and pockets.

Kitchen herb garden

The convenience of a herb garden right in your kitchen speaks for itself. But the indoor garden does so much more, prettying up the space while not taking up space. Installation and maintenance are quick and easy too. Photo courtesy Visi Magazine.

Courtyard ecosystem

Instead of a concrete wall in a concrete jungle, this courtyard has been transformed into a mini-ecosystem where there is still space to sit down and reflect on a busy work day. “Since planting my garden, I have butterflies, bees, and birds that frequent my courtyard.” – homeowner Jarrett Swersky, in Visi Magazine.

Urban Blok development

Urban planning and development demands architects save space, build up, and apartments are often small, and right in amongst a bustling city. But that doesn’t mean the homes need to be dull or cramped. Bringing green wall trellises into a development such as this, breaks up the spaces between apartments with an aesthetically pleasing green building solution, that brings nature back into the urban, and improves oxygen quality surrounding the vertical garden. Ensamble Studio at Tippet Rise Art Center

Award-winning Spanish architects, Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa from Ensamble Studio were part of the 31 speakers at this year’s Design Indaba Conference 2018 in Cape Town.

One of their most iconic pieces showcased at the Indaba was their Structures of Landscape series created for and at the Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, USA.

The Domo, Beartooth Portal and Inverted Portal are monumental sculptures that sit on the 10,000 acre ranch under Montana’s Big Sky.

The sculptures were cast on site from the earth over 8 months through the winter. And they are now used to host musical concerts. The structures can be touched, sat under and walked through.

The sheer size of the ranch and that it only houses 9 sculptures in total allows each of the artworks at the Tippet Rise Art Center their own sculptural park.

“The land is the departure point of the design and the construction of Structures of Landscape. It is its reference and its support, also its matter. There is a strong dialect between the architecture that we built and the land,” Debora Mesa Molina, Ensamble Studio.

Blunt Architects Floating Staircase

Blunt Architect’s Pieter Steyn designed and built his own house 2 years ago and installed a beautiful floating staircase creating a majestic entry to their home. 14 steel steps are suspended by vertical cables offering not only support, but acting as an external balustrade.

Where the cables are fixed to the ground, a garden bed has been planted with shrubbery and creeper, which now 2 years later has travelled to the height of the cables where they are fixed to the stairway’s portico.

A cascading green wall subtly encloses the stairwell, and a guarded entrance offers guests some protection from the elements.

The design is modern and functional, making use of sustainable materials and it blends the home into its surroundings. Tensile Cables supplied the cables for the project.

Thank you to Pieter Steyn at Blunt Architects for the photography.

Structural Rod Systems

Tensile Cables offers a range of rod systems which are ideal for roof trusses, structural supports, and bracing. The benefit of these systems lies in the galvanised steel rod that has higher stiffness than the equivalent size cable.

Rod systems can be made up to specific lengths using a coupler nut design which joins rods together should the required length be longer than 6 metres. The rod sizes are available in M12, M16, M20, M24 & M30 allowing for a variety of different applications and strengths.

We offer technical assistance with the sizing, system design and application of rod systems.

Our rod systems are available with different end fork systems, including toggle ends, with either adjustable length or tensioning capability, as well as fixed length forks without length adjustment.

See our system drawings below, and please contact us for further information.

Deckscapes Porticos & Pergola

Tensile Cables was tasked by Deckscapes to supply bracing cables for a timber portico over a doorway in a home in Constantia, as well horizontal cables for a pergola.

While being structurally very strong and sound, the minimalism of the cables creates a modern look and feel. There is a simplicity to the structures, and the stainless steel compliments the timber frames.

The installation was hassle free, and only took two days to complete. Tensile Cables supplies hand tool to tension the stainless steel cables to the fittings provided on site.

Stainless steel cable pergolas offer a green roof solution as the cables act as a trellis for plant growth.

Deckscapes specialise in timber solutions which they combine with various other mediums. Find them at facebook.com/woodendecking/ or deckscapes.co.za
